A new version of the 1996 football anthem ‘Three Lions’ is being released in time for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds’ Ian Broudie have confirmed the news of the track, which was originally sung by the pair and David Baddiel when England hosted the Euros in 1996, featuring the famous lyric: “Football’s coming home”.

Broudie appeared as a guest on Skinner’s breakfast show on Absolute Radio, during which Skinner asked him: “So, I’ve gotta ask you Ian, are you going to do a new version of ‘Three Lions’ for the World Cup? I think it’d be good, it’s an unusual sort of World Cup.”

Broudie replied: “We should have a chat about that maybe,” Skinner responded: “We’ve left it a bit late, we’re filming the video on Thursday!”

Earlier this year, David Baddiel said that the football song should be “put to bed” after the England Women’s team’s Euro 2022 victory.

“The women have reset the clock,” Baddiel told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme according to The Guardian after they won the Euros this summer.

“It was beautiful to hear it sung out of Wembley as we finally clinched a final, I really did think that would never happen,” Baddiel added. “It’s so amazing to actually think, ‘Oh, we’ve won, this doesn’t happen, it’s actually happened.’”

At the 2018 Men’s World Cup after England’s victory over Sweden, ‘Three Lions’ made it to number one on Spotify’s charts.

The track managed to overtake Drake for the top spot, gaining over one million streams in just one day.

Last month, EA Sports revealed the FIFA 23 soundtrack which included a mix of electronic artists including music from 34 countries.

Artists with work on the new soundtrack include, Kaytranada, Denzel Curry, Flume, Disclosure, Gorillaz, Chase & Status and plenty more.
