New study reveals 84% decline in number of nightclubs in Ireland since 2000

The number of active nightclubs in Ireland has fallen from 522 to 83 in the space of 25 years, a new study from Give Us The Night has found.

The report, which claims to be the first “in-depth” look at the Irish nightclub scene in 15 years, revealed an 84% decline in the number of nightlife venues in the country since 2000 – citing the rise of free-entry late bars, outdated laws, and other financial pressures.

Give Us The Night suggests that "outdated" license requirements for nightclubs in the country could be part of problem, noting the impact of the 1995 Public Dance Halls Act, which was “originally introduced to suppress social activity and shaped by a conservative, anti-youth sentiment”.

The study compares the current permitted closing time of nightclubs in Dublin which is 2:30AM, with other European capitals — with many offering 24 hour operating times, while most offer at least a 6:30AM curfew.

In turn, nightclubs in Ireland are only open an average of six to nine hours a week, and make up a minor 0.6% of the 14,085 active liquor licences in use across Ireland.

While a proposed bill to allow nightclubs in Ireland to operate until 6:30AM on weekends was announced in 2022, it was delayed in 2023 and as of time of publishing there is still no clear date as to when it will be passed.

Give Us The Night recommend in the report that a permitted opening time of 5:AM would significantly boost the nightlife economy in the country, though this would still mean Ireland has the earliest curfew for nightclubs in Western Europe.

Despite worrying figures, 90% of respondents to Give Us The Night’s survey believe that nightclubs are safe and inclusive social spaces, particularly for minority and LGBTQ+ communities. 90% of respondents also believe that every community should have access to a local nightclub or venue.

Give Us The Night's Sunil Sharpe also remains positive about the future of Ireland's nightlife: "We've had more clubs open than close this year, and while it's only a marginal increase, it suggests that the worst might be over. Time will tell.”

The survey also showed that participants were also overwhelmingly positive about the importance of club culture, with 81% agreeing that nightclubs have a “timeless appeal”.

"Nightclubs are 60-years-old in Ireland; that's a long time. The fact they're still a thing, and still matter dearly to younger and older generations, means a lot," Sharpe told Mixmag.

"We have to keep fighting for this. What will club music be, without clubs?"
