Moor Mother unveils details of new album, ‘The Great Bailout’

Moor Mother has shared details of her ninth studio album, ‘The Great Bailout’, due to land on March 8 via ANTI-Records.

The nine-track record explores colonialism in the UK, the horrors of British slavery, and the ways in which it was paid for and later "obscured". It marks her third release on ANTI-Records and her ninth solo album to date.

Moor Mother, real name Camae Ayewa, combines themes of Afrofuturism on her latest record, running through jazz, hip hop, beat poetry, and a “multitude” of instrumentation.

‘The Great Bailout’ features the likes of Vijay Ayer, Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty, Lonnie Holley, Alya Al Sultani, Kyle Kidd, Mary Lattimore, and more across nine tracks.

A brand new track from the record, ‘All The Money’, is out now alongside an accompanying music video. The single questions British landmarks such as St Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben, and The Palace of Westminster, asking, “Where did they get all the money?”.

The track is laced with samples from Vijay Ayer and Alya Al Sultani, and looks at “the many captured Black lives swallowed in the waters of the transatlantic crossing and the continuing drowning out of this British history,” according to a press release.

Themes of Black feminism are also explored on ‘All The Money’, as well as the African American identity and Afrofuturism, visually coming together with the help of filmmaker Cauleen Smith. Check out the video below.

“Displacement and its effects are not discussed enough,” Ayewa says on the themes of her next record. “The PTSD of displacement should be a focus.”

“As we have the opportunity to learn about things happening in the world, we also have the opportunity to learn about ourselves,” she says. “We’ve been through so many different acts of systematic violence.”

Moor Mother is currently on tour. With multiple dates in Australia over the coming days, she's then set to head to the UK in March with stops in Bristol and London, before concluding in Paris on May 6. Find out more about her forthcoming shows here.
