Lanark Artefax ends hiatus with first record in four years, ‘Metallur’

Glasgow’s Lanark Artefax is breaking his production hiatus with his first new record in more than four years, ‘Metallur’, due to land this April on AD 93.

The record marks his first in almost five years following 2019’s ‘Corra Linn’, a three-track EP consisting of field recordings and digital synths informed by experimental sound design.

‘Metallur’ is set for release on April 26, and consists of five tracks. The eponymous lead single landed today on all platforms, listen below.

“Emerging from a generative paradox of laser precision and fluid dynamism, ‘Metallur’ fuses percussive, metallic force with warping tempos and a field of ethereal resonance and debris,” reads the record’s description.

The resulting sound is said to be “insurgent and elemental”, featuring alien-like vocal samples and melodic soundscapes - “music for a crushed infinity”.

Speaking to Mixmag in 2017, the Glaswegian producer explained on his production process: “With club-orientated music, it's quite hard to have that human element because there are formulas and structures that are necessary to the way that it works and the language it uses.”

“More abstract and deconstructed music lets you pick all that apart and you can do something else with it,” he added.

Lanark Artefax’s next release marks a break in his four-year production hiatus, following a return to stage with his new audio-visual show last year at Unsound Festival.

Coming up, the producer is set to perform a headline show at London’s ICA in May, followed by a performance at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound at the end of the month.

‘Metallur’ will be released digitally and on limited edition vinyl with an embossed sleeve and printed inner. Pre-order the record here, and check out the artwork and tracklist below.
