Kirk Field’s Rave New World book to hit the stage with new theatre show

Kirk Field’s award-winning book Rave New World is primed to become a theatre show this summer as it heads to Edinburgh Fringe.

Rave New World: Acid House Cabaret is set to open at the arts and culture festival on August 13, running for two weeks at Edinburgh comedy club Other Yin.

Described as a “unique one-man show” documenting tales of clubbing through the ‘80s and ‘90s, Acid House Cabaret gives a glimpse into the “musical mischief” of Field’s time as Mixmag’s first rave-focused journalist.

The theatre show will continue to tour across the UK alongside Phil McIntyre and other special guests and “rave culture legends” after closing out at Edinburgh Fringe on August 26.

Acid House Cabaret marks the 35th anniversary of the acid house hysteria of 1989 - otherwise known as the Second Summer of Love.

“Discover the true identity of DJ Roofrack, play Rave Family Fortunes and Have I Got Acid House News for You, embrace the absurdity of rave flyers, learn the real words to your favourite 90's dance anthems, and spin the songwheel of steel to choose the last tune of the night,” reads the show’s synopsis.

Kirk Field’s acclaimed book, Rave New World: Confessions of a Raving Reporter, was released in 2023 giving a behind-the-scenes look at “the thrills and pills of 20th-century club culture”.

Since its release, Rave New World has gone on to win silver at the ARIA Awards, following the release of an audiobook entirely written, narrated and recorded by Field himself - beating the likes of Stephen Fry and Alan Partridge.

Rave New World has picked up support from Robbie Williams, Carl Cox, and Fatboy Slim, quickly becoming the UK’s best-selling dance music hardback and audiobook.
