Jack Master (Slam remix)
The Glaswegian linchpins plunge to propulsive depths with this rework of Richie
Richie Hawtin is a man of many names. The more familiar monikers he’s released under over the course of his esteemed career include Plastikman and F.U.S.E, but in 1993 he slipped out a four-track effort of Chicago house under the name Jack Master.
The EP, titled ‘Basement Trax Vol. 1’, showcased a playful side to Richie that wasn’t present in his more minimalistic techno offerings. It featured the brilliantly pumping ‘Bang The Box’ that forefronted a hypnotic vocal above rampant percussion.
Scottish duo Slam are mainstays of Glasgow’s vibrant techno scene. They’ve been releasing music together for 25 years and are still maintaining the magic to this day, showing no signs of slowing down with eighth studio album ‘Machine Cut Noise’ due on October 28.
Late last year the pair minted the Chicago-inspired Soma Track Series subdivision of their Soma Quality Recordings label with the powerful ‘Make You Move’. For the next instalment they’ve turned ‘Bang The Box’ into a mind-bending basement destroyer.
‘Bang The Box (Slam remix)’ retains the all-conquering vocal of the original, but plunges the track down into propulsive depths with more aggressive percussion and atmospheric synth stabs.
Richie Hawtin has shared his thoughts on the remix: “Released in the early 90s, the original Jack Master EP was a pseudo-name that I used to record fun classic Chicago inspired tracks that were made for my DJ sets. Slam’s new updated take on the original, uses the original voice sample (that’s actually mine) and reworks the track into a full throttle stomping jack track perfect for today's dance floors!”. We're premiering it below.
