Indoor test events to take place as UK plans for venue reopenings take shape

A series of socially distanced indoor test events are set to take place in the UK as plans towards allowing venues to reopen are formed.

Guidelines have been published for indoor venues, and performances at the London Palladium and Butlin’s holiday parks are set to go ahead as pilots.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: "This is an important milestone for our performing artists, who have been waiting patiently in the wings since March.”

Open-air gigs, festival and theatre shows have also been greenlit and can take place from Saturday, July 11, with reduced capacities and electronic ticketing in case details are needed for track and trace systems.

Dowden added: "Of course we won't see crowds flooding into their venues, but from July 11 our theatres, operas, dance and music shows can start putting on outdoor performances to socially distant audiences.”

This marks the start of stage three in the reopening of the live entertainment sector.

Stage four and five will see indoor performances with a limited audience and then indoor performances with a more sizable audience allowed. This could mark the point where clubs can start operating, although there is currently no set date for when these stages will be reached.
