Ibiza’s Privilege club obtains more than €8 million in renovation funding

Ibiza superclub Privilege is set to obtain more than €8 million in government support to fund renovations in and around the venue, reports Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera.

Privilege, which has been closed since 2019, is one of five tourist locations receiving funding toward restoration work in Ibiza, led by Eivissa’s Tourism Planning Commission.

Of the €23 million set to be distributed amongst the five establishments, which also include hotels and apartment blocks across San Antonio and Playa d’en Bossa, €8.2 million will be put into the renovation of Privilege.

The funding will go towards restoring the club’s water system and solar energy power in an effort to bring the 10,000-capacity venue back to life.

The Minister of Tourism Planning, Mariano Juan, told Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera: “We encourage private investment to modernize and make our hotel plant and other tourist establishments more sustainable with incentive policies without expanding the number of tourist places.”

Privilege has been closed since 2019, and was acquired by Bahía de San Antonio S.A, owned by Grupo Empresas Matutes, in 2022 when the majority ownership was sold.

The superclub was also granted permission to expand by 15% in 2020 as part of new COVID regulations but was only able to do so if its height and capacity remained the same.

Privilege originally opened in 1978 as Ku Club before changing its name in the mid-90s. It holds the Guinness Book of World Record for the world’s largest nightclub.

It’s currently unclear when the superclub will reopen, if at all, although news of its restoration points toward its hopeful return in the near future.
