Glasgow’s iconic venue The Arches is set to re-open after eight years

After eight years, the legendary Glasgow nightclub, The Arches is re-opening.

Set within the same space as its original home in Glasgow's city centre, The Arches will relaunch with a brand new event series "The New World" on October 21, with a line-up yet to be announced.

The Arches closed in 2015 following a decision from to restrict its license to midnight by Glasgow City Council, with police complaints of drug use and disorder given as reasons behind the order.

Before its closure, The Arches - named after the red brick victorian railway arches of its home - had been open for 24 years. Established in 1991 by Andy Arnold, and growing to become a world-renowned location for Scotland's dance music scene.

The reports surrounding the club were centred around an alleged 26 drug and alcohol-related offences in one night as well as a woman collapsing outside, resulting in its 3AM license being stripped.

The closure of the club saw thousands sign a petition to reinstate its license with the likes of Makar Liz Lochhead, Irvine Welsh and members of Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian and Franz Ferdinand signing.

As it could not remain open, The Arches re-opened as a coffee roastery, café and bakery in 2018.

Organisers behind The Arches are Watchtower and Platform who have revealed the news of the return of the nightclub set for next month with its full line-up out later today.

Its re-opening party will run on October 21 with its all-new event series titled, ‘The New World’ which will include nine shows in total.

Tom Ketley, Watchtower founder told Mixmag: “This project is of huge cultural significance for music in Glasgow, Scotland and beyond. Seeing the unfortunate closure of numerous venues in recent years has been hard on the industry.

"The launch of a new large-scale event series in the city centre will bring job opportunities, boost the local economy, and most importantly provide a music space for the next generation to enjoy.

"The venue’s history is renowned, and it holds a special place in people’s hearts, so we know that today’s news will mean so much to so many. Having delivered safe and successful events in Scotland for the past 10 years we know what it takes to launch a project of this scale.

"Glasgow is legendary for having one of the best crowds in the world and our aim is to champion that by attracting dance music fans from all over the UK and beyond."
