It's a good month for footwork, what with DJ Spinn releasing some of the best work of his career ('Dubby' with Rashad and Danny Brown is impeccable, see elsewhere on this page). Teklife young guns Taye and Earl are also on a hot streak, turning in 'XTCC' which is included on the former's latest EP. Its ice cold vocal sample ("there's a void where there should be ecstasy") is taken from Kym Mazelle's 1988 cut 'Useless (I Don't Need You Now)' and undercut with oceanic low-end and skittering percussion. The sample nods to Marshall Jefferson, who produced 'Useless', and the way whispy strings and melancholy electronics come in halfway through hints at Rashad's style – two Chi legends influencing two Chi risers intent on pushing things forward into the future.
