Commodo
How What Time
9/10
Commodo’s always been in his own lane as a producer who straddles the sonic divide between grime and dubstep.
Across debut album ‘How What Time’, he exposes more of his introverted palette: in addition to enlisting MCs with unconventional flows in Trim and Rocks FOE (the latter of whom excels on standout ‘Set It Straight’), Commodo dabbles in experimental trap on ‘My Liege’ as well as hushed, ambient flips such as the beautiful ‘Russian Glass’.
As an LP, though, this is an album that functions around the harsh and the gritty, full of texture, depth and feeling. The thumping 808 bounce of ‘Hadi Hadi Ah’ is a highlight, as is the abstract, aqua-themed ‘Floods’, but it’s the bright, metallic shine of ’Sleepwave’ we’ve had on repeat the most. A unique debut – and one that fully delivers on the hype.
