Chengdu nightclub .TAG to close after more than a decade

Beloved Chinese nightclub .TAG has announced its closure after more than a decade.

Speaking to Resident Advisor, the Chengdu-based venue said it has been hit with new regulations that would force it to close at 2:AM – the main reason behind its decision.

"The move cuts parties short at peak time, long before the sunrise views the techno club is famous for," .TAG said in a statement to RA. "With economic downturn making it impossible to sustain this model, the team has made the difficult decision to end operations at the iconic rooftop venue."

.TAG, which sits on the 21st floor of a building on Jinxiu Street, just south of the city centre, first opened in 2013. In its 11 years, the club has welcomed the likes of Oyubi, Manami, Physical Therapy, Amor Satyr, and many more.

The venue will close in just a matter of weeks, with its final party set to go ahead on Sunday, August 17. In the lead-up to its closure, events currently listed feature bills including DJ-BLUE, Zarah, and Sanyo B2B DJ Pex.

.TAG also noted the current cultural landscape in China as a reason for its closure, highlighting surmounting pressure on clubs and nightlife.

“The team remains committed to the dancefloor and to the community that has always kept it alive," they told RA, hinting at the next generation of .TAG – and how they’re now on the lookout for a new location.
