A new campaign to help disabled live performers has been launched

Music charity Attitude Is Everything has partnered with Independent Music Week to create a new "guidance and training programme" to help live promotors increase accessibility for those who are deaf and blind in the live music industry.

The campaign, titled Just Ask, is centered around the question "do you or any of your crew members have access requirements?’" and the charity hopes that "promoters at all levels in the industry" will take notice of their workers needs.

Attitude is Everything wants to make sure that all performers have the right facilities in place ahead of their performances. The Charity believes that more awareness on correct measures is the best way for those deaf, blind, neuro-divergent and with other disabilities flourish in the industry.

20 promoters initially took part in a pilot of the project but today (January 31) Just Ask is being rolled out nationwide.

Just Ask involves free monthly open training sessions, the first of which will take place on Monday, February 14. The charity has also published a series of free guides which are available online here.

These workshops and guides provide information about how to best cater to artists with disabilities.

An Attitude Is Everything survey conducted in 2019 found that 70% of artists had withheld details of a condition out of fear of these details impairing or damaging their relationship with a client, promotor or venue.

This meant that two in three performers with disability have impacted their own health as a result.

International Venue Week has confirmed that that all promoters taking part in the 2023 event are to be required to put the Just Ask plan into action.

Sybil Bell, Founder of Independent Venue Week says: “We’ve worked with Attitude is Everything for a number of years, across various projects and initiatives and are really pleased to be working with them on their Next Stage project.

"We are lucky to work with a fantastic network of in-house and external promoters who have been, and will continue to be, integral in shaping the new guidelines and resources for other promoters, ultimately resulting in a more supportive and inclusive experience for all in the live music community.”
