Beatport has added a new, dedicated genre category for Brazilian funk.

The music platform launched the new category on Wednesday (April 30), as part of plans to "recognise one of Brazil's most dynamic and culturally rich musical exports."

Brazilian funk, also known as baile funk and funk carioca, originates from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. While it has been a recognisable sound in Brazilian electronic music since the '70s, it has exploded in popularity throughout Latin America, the US, Europe, and beyond.

Alongside adding Brazilian funk as a genre category, Beatport has also announced a slew of changes to make its platform more accessible to Brazilian users.

Subscriptions for Beatport and Beatsource are being offered in Brazilian Real at a 60% discount, with the site now automatically displaying in Portuguese for users in Brazil.

Beatport has also announced a new spotlight page, “Discover Brazil”, to platform the artists and sounds emerging from the country.

“Brazilian funk is more than a genre – it’s a cultural force with deep electronic roots,” says Beatport's VP of Global Curation Raphael Pujol. “After witnessing its electrifying impact firsthand, we knew it was time to bring it to Beatport."

As Funk’s influence spreads worldwide, we’re proud to provide a dedicated space for the DJs, artists and labels shaping its future," he continues. "By launching Funk on Beatport, we aim to elevate the sound, amplify its creators and connect the global dance community with this powerful movement.”
