Banksy rumoured to have purchased historic Glastonbury pub for £1 million

Notoriously anonymous graffiti artist Banksy has been rumoured to have bought a historic pub in the Glastonbury area.

He is believed to be part of the group that has purchased and renovated The Crown, which is situated in Pilton, close to Worthy Farm, the site of Glastonbury Festival, although the reports have not been confirmed.

The pub reportedly cost £1 million to purchase, and was originally built in the 1600s. It had been shut for a number of years before a renovation took place, and was re-opened temporarily in 2021 and fully in November 2022.

It is reported to now feature decorations that includes art by Banksy and his friend Dorcas Casey, whose work featured in the anonymous artist’s Dismaland Exhibition.

Playful décor can be found around the pub, including the pub’s signage depicting a fallen over crown and wonky text, and a squirrel in a glass case playing pool on the wall.

Not everyone is sure about the rumours though. One resident told ITV: “I guess it could be true but nobody knows… no one knows what he looks like.

“It would be quite good if it was true. A mural might pop up on the wall,” they continued.

Other rumours surrounding the pub’s include Emily Eavis, the co-organiser of Glastonbury Festival with her father Michael, is part of the group behind its renovation.

The Sun reported the news, quoting an anonymous “source”. They said: “Banksy loved the idea of being part of Glastonbury and its right on message. It’s also a gateway to all the music superstars who attend. He has put a decent chunk of money in.”

The pub is currently managed by Owain Powell, who has previously worked as a caterer at Glastonbury Festival, as well as operating a fish and chip shop on wheels during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

He denied that Banksy was involved, telling The Sun: “I bought the pub with a couple of friends.”
