Arca
Mutant
7/10
Arca's second album arrives just a year on from his debut, 'Xen', and off the back of production credits for Kanye West, FKA Twigs and Björk. 'Xen' was full of abstract noises and baroque sound sculptures, but it was also quite an introspective album.
'Mutant' takes a more outward-looking approach, with more focus on Arca's contorted rhythms and bold melodies. Sonically, his music has never had so much depth, with each track revealing hidden depths on closr listens. His compositions have evolved, too, with 'Snakes' and 'Front Load' packing a huge emotional heft, but the LP still feels too long, and some of its songs feel too formless.
Arca works best when he's working with a defined song structure. But there's still no one else really making music like this.
