Aphrohead
'Resurrection' (Crosstown Rebels)
7/10
Aphrohead is one of several alter-egos of Chicago producer Felix Stallings Jr, aka Felix Da Housecat. It was how the world first knew him, before electroclash made him a clubland star. Primarily a 1990s singles act, Aphrohead returns with an album whose second half is relentless – and effective – hypnotic techno thudding on tunes such as '1KING 1QUEEN' and 'Grown Man Cryy'. These are high-end DJ tools, but the juiciest cuts are earlier on: the gloopy, Josh Wink-esque, vaguely sinister throb of 'Come To ME', the pulsing groove of 'Elevator (I'll Take The Stairs)' and the super-funky, camped-up machine drive of 'Let's PRANCE'. These three tracks make 'Resurrection' especially worth seeking out.
