Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors calls out publicist Heathcliff Berru for sexual assault
It's time to address this very serious issue
Amber Coffman, lead singer of Dirty Projectors and featured vocalist for Major Lazer's 'Get Free', took to her Twitter today to very publicly call out founder of Life or Death PR and Management Heathcliff Berru, alledging he sexually assaulting her in front of fellow music industry peers.
Life or Death PR & Management works with a roster of major artists including D'Angelo, Odd Future, Killer Mike, Mac Miller and more.
Her Tweets quickly caught the attention of fellow women in the industry that chimed in with their own horror stories about Berru. Allegedly, Berru also sexually assaulted and roofied Beth Martinez of PR company Danger Village, who works with Goldroom, MØ and more.
Bethany Cosentino of the band Best Coast, Judy Miller of Motormouth Media (Flying Lotus, Four Tet, Chet Faker), Martika Finch of Superfly (parent company of Bonnaroo and Outside Lands) and Yasmine Kittles of Los Angeles-based duo Tearist then added to the growing list of women who confirmed Coffman's stories and supplied their own as well.
Unfortunately, misogyny and sexual assault are not topics new to the music industry world. Mixmag discussed the need to address the issue from the club and dancefloor angle, but it remains a concerning and unresolved issue that is finding a rare moment in the spotlight today thanks to Amber Coffman.
Update 14:26 PST: Berru has officially stepped down from his position as CEO of Life or Death PR and Management.
The company has shared the following statement.
"Life or Death has a zero tolerance policy for the type of conduct alleged in today's on-line postings. We take these allegations very seriously.
The men and women who make up this company do not, and will not, condone or tolerate any conduct described in the on-line postings. Life Or Death is 3 men and 3 women who are committed to promoting art and serving the clients that we're so privileged to represent. We are taking measures to ensure that the alleged behavior did not, and will not, make its way into company operations or impact our commitment to promoting art and assisting our clients.
We are grateful to Heathcliff Berru for all the work he's done to date and his creative vision at the company. We appreciate and support his decision to step down as CEO of Life Or Death."
