A 60,000 capacity event is due to take place in New York City’s Central Park this summer.

The event could potentially go ahead in August, says New York mayor Bill de Blasio, who announced the blueprints for the festival.

The Great Lawn is the prospective location in the famed park, with the upcoming event supposedly run by Live Nation. The festival will mark the first return to live music in the city on such a mass scale, coined ‘The Official NYC Homecoming Concert in Central Park’.

“This concert is going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s going to be an amazing line-up. The whole week is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen before in New York City,” says Bill de Balsio on the event.

No artists are currently confirmed for the festival, although a date has been tentatively reserved for August 21 and a promise of “eight iconic stars” will perform over three hours according to producer Clive Davis who is helping to book the event.

The Grammy Award-winning / Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame aficionado has previously worked alongside Janis Joplin, Whitney Houston and Bruce Springsteen. “I can’t think of a better place than the Great Lawn of Central Park to be the place where you say that New York is reopening,” he said.

Tickets to the “homecoming” event will be free for the most part, as 70% of tickets are designated to those vaccinated only. Other tickets will go to those without vaccines and VIP passes.

New York State is now well on its way toward complete reopening. As restrictions lifted in NYC last week, the city’s clubs are now permitted to open at full capacity, although only attendees who are vaccinated will be able to attend with no masks or social distancing.

Foo Fighters have been confirmed to headline the first full capacity gig at Madison Square Garden since the pandemic began later this month on June 20.
