35-year-old woman dies after falling ill at Tomorrowland
Antwerp officials said there is "strong evidence" that the Canadian national's death was "drug-related", though a full toxicology report is pending
A 35-year-old woman has died after falling ill at Tomorrowland Festival over the weekend, Belgian police have confirmed.
According to AFP (via RTL Today), the attendee - a Canadian national - became unwell on Friday evening (July 18), and “received first aid on site” at the festival before being transferred to Antwerp University Hospital, where she later died.
"This morning, we were saddened to learn of her death," Tomorrowland spokeswoman Debby Wilmsen told RTL Today. "Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and loved ones."
An investigation into the festivalgoer's death has been launched by the Antwerp public prosecutor's office, however it said that "initial findings" indicated "strong evidence of a drug-related death".
"An autopsy and a thorough toxicology examination will provide definitive answers," a spokesperson added.
The tragedy comes after a fire destroyed Tomorrowland's main stage, just 48-hours before the festival was due to welcome hundreds of thousands of attendees to the first weekend of the annual event in Boom, Belgium.
Following a tense two days for arriving ticketholders, Tomorrowland announced that the festival would continue as planned, after it had set up an alternative main stage.
The cause of the fire to the original main stage, an ice-inspired arena called the Orbyz, remains unknown.
