LWS ‘Steady On’ (can you feel the sun)

The chaotic potential of this track is hinted at in its opening section, as a metallic whirring buzzes through the skewed percussion with a sense of subtle menace. Building from there with steady momentum, unconstrained synth sirens spiral quickly then cease, amid urgent pulsing tones, growing bigger and bigger — until everything fades into an echoey halt. Then that menacing whirring slithers back in to spark screwface excitement, evolving into crescendoing synths that tee up a momentous closing section where everything comes together. Pure peak-time fuel.

Bagatune, M-Beat, Missing, TeeZandos ‘On/Off’ (MOVES Recordings)

M-Beat and Missing bring stacks of expertise to the table with their new collaborative project Bagatune, where they will merge Afrobeats, rap, garage, drill and a “lifetime of jungle". Launched this month with a single featuring East London MC TeeZandos, ‘On/Off’, the track is a thrilling introduction to their ‘Fusion without Formula’ MO. It fuses the classic ‘Surkit’ sample, a Detroit techno track famously reimagined by LTJ Bukem, into a drill-like beat (with Amen breaks for good measure) that TeeZandos expertly spits across.

Torus ft. Malibu 'Summer of Love' (Self-released)

“Summer? We hardly knew ‘er” is what we’d say if we felt even an inch of the bittersweet-meets-downright-silly contemplation presented within Dutch wallop specialist Torus’Summer of Love’. Featuring French producer Malibu, the track kicks off with a sombre rendition of Tracy Chapman’s ‘Fast Car’ against dramatic strings lifted from The Veronicas’ ‘Untouched’ — before descending into spine-tingling atmospheric breakdown. There’s a surprise towards the last minute for anyone getting too deep into post-Summertime sadness however, as the pair combine a sample of Fatboy Slim’s ‘Right Here, Right Now’ with a trickle of ‘All Saints’ ‘Pure Shores’. It’s a visit to the Ibiza airport Burger King in sonic form.

Djrum ‘Codex’ (Houndstooth)

No one can deconstruct a club quite like Djrum; as such, there can be no greater harbinger that months of dissociating on hazy basement dancefloors is just around the corner than news of the London-based artist’s first release since 2019. While the full EP isn’t due to land on Houndstooth until November, we expect the frenetic, squelching percussion of lead single ‘Codex’ will be impossible to avoid as we hang up our festival boots. While the track maintains a cacophony of rough-edged, whiplash-inducing breaks through its 6 minutes 15 seconds run, there’s still room for some delicate atmospheric elements by way of shimmering bleeps and a glissading flute riff — making for an enigmatic club track that ensures all of our disparate cravings are duly satisfied.

KMRU & Aho Ssan ‘Clear vision’ (Subtext Recordings)

While the crystalline combination of technological breakdown and cinematic atmosphere has become a signature of ambient master KMRU’s work, ‘Clear Vision’, his latest collaboration with French sound artist Aho Ssanm takes things a step further. Taken from Subtext’s upcoming compilation ‘Cybernetics, or Ghosts?’ - that serves the dual function of celebrating a decade of the imprint as well as a sonic accompaniment to a book of essays edited by Michael Salu, inspired by Italo Calvino’s 1967 essay Cybernetics and Ghosts - the track employs buzzing, keening that take on a wire-like quality, warping through the the track at different tempos to create an unmistakable metallic hiss — melting into and resurfacing from its melodic organ stabs with hypnotic aplomb.

The Alchemist feat. ScHoolBoy Q ‘Ferraris in The Rain’ (ALC)

Hip hop legend The Alchemist reconnects with LA rapper ScHoolBoy Q on a track that sees both of them sharing the mic for the first time. Best known for his influential production skills, The Alchemist, real name Alan Daniel Maman, shows off his signature style with a soulful sample-heavy beat, infused with blaring, jazzy horns. The lead single from the artist’s latest studio album (his first solo project this year after producing work for Big Sean, Gangrene and Hit-Boy), ‘Ferraris in The Rain’ is bold and classy with a melancholic edge. It is released via Maman’s own imprint ACL Records.

Mpho.Wav, Atmos Blaq ‘ATMOS WAV I’ (MPHO.WAV)

Soweto-born producer Atmos Blaq has been championing the sounds of 3-step for a while now. A relatively new development in South Africa’s thriving electronic music scene, 3-step combines elements from amapiano, Afrotech and broken beat, and layers these on top of a characteristic three-kick drum pattern. For ‘ATMOS WAV I’ the artist lends his 3-step expertise to Mpho.Wav, a lesser known, up-and-coming artist who recently released his debut album.

The resulting track is a heart-felt 3-step masterpiece, with light percussive claps, a soaring piano melody and a bouncing log drum. The pair skilfully play around with the various different facets of the genre to create an atmospheric track that fluctuates in style throughout.

Dar Disku ‘Dyabli ft. Yacine El Khaldi’ (Soundway Records)

Ahead of their debut, self-titled album, the Bahraini-born, British-based DJ collective, Dar Disku, shared ‘Dyabli’, an infectiously high-energy, disco-infused dance track featuring the Algerian singer, Yacine Elkhaldi. Inspired by the duo’s desire “to create a track for the smoky discotheques of the SWANA region”, ‘Dyabli’ seamlessly blends Arabic sounds with electronic–leaning production techniques – a style that is characteristic of both Dar Disku’s DJ sets and their corresponding record label. It sets the pace for the rest of the album, which traverses Egyptian folk, Turkish psych, Algerian rai, Sudanese funk, Ethiopian jazz and Khaleeji disco, all through a fresh and modern lens that pushes the above genres in new directions.

Pa Salieu ‘Belly’ (Warner Music)

He’s a free man. Pa Salieu has stormed back into the world, after serving 21 months in prison, with an absolute anthem. The track rolls in with a funky bassline and uplifting synths as well as the opening line: "I’ve been gone for a while, but I still make it back to you." Drawing in a more relaxed approach compared to his previous work, it blends the genres of drill and Afrobeats in a slower sense. Overall the song as well as its music video preaches kindness, to support loved ones and of course, that Pa Salieu has returned.

Proc Fiskal ‘Lilaei mp3’ (Goodness)

It’s beyond us how this absolute weapon hasn’t been swept up with the same vigour as this year’s best bass bangers yet, but there’s still time. With another glitchy club cut from Proc Fiskal, ‘Lilaei mp3’ swirls through a vortex of low-slung basslines and staggered synths, reminiscent of recent Joy Orbison heaters or a gone-rogue Caribou.
