The best DJ mixes of the year 2024 so far - August - Music - Mixmag

Amor Satyr & Siu Mata ‘RA.948’

The opening of this mix from Parisian turbo-charged club duo Amor Satyr & Siu Mata feels like you’re singing the cross and saying your prayers. The remainder feels like you’re on rocket ship catapulted at light speed into a galaxy far, far away where fun, raucous and bleeding-edge club sounds form the intoxicating atmosphere all around. The heavens have delivered.

Stacey Hotwaxx Hale ‘I-94 mix’

The I-94 mix series launched this summer as a way to honour the Detroit-Chicago connection that has been pivotal to development and evolution of dance music. Named after the Interstate Hghway that stretches through each city, I-94 “dives deep into the gritty, raw, and undeniable connection between these cities, fueling the underground scene with an unmistakably Midwestern pulse.” This month Detroit pioneer Stacey ‘Hotwaxx’ Hale stepped up with an hour mix which underscores why she’s often referred to as the Godmother of House. Carrying a raw, deep and funky energy that harks back to genre’s world-changing origins, it’s essential listening for all.

Silent Servant ‘Beats In Space 125’

This is a momentous mix from late LA techno savant Silent Servant, ripping through gnarly cuts in the sphere of techno, electro and EBM with tight blends and pulsating momentum. Recorded at the close of 2023, weeks before his tragic and untimely passing, Tim Sweeney chose to release it this month via Beats In Space in honour of what would have been Silent Servant’s 47th birthday. An accompanying interview is a must-listen for thoughtful commentary on techno history.

INVT in The Lab NYC

We hoped the Mixmag Lab’s return to NYC would pop off, and Miami duo of the moment INVT made sure of that with a near two-hour set of booty-shaking bangers — including a whopping 11 unreleased new cuts of their own. Delving into plenty of trippy tech-house and hypnotic house and techno, it’s a set designed to lock in to and feel your limbs gyrating invontularily for the duration. It wouldn’t be an INVT set without moments of boisterous Latin club sounds, from Baile funk to guaracha, too, which are dynamically peppered through and spice up the selections.

Mia Koden ‘An Intersection of Deep, Percussive Dubstep & Dub 2004-2024’

A masterclass of a mix that dives into the deep and percussive side of the dub and dubstep genres. Set in the tasteful location of My Analog Journal’s studio, with an audio setup to die for and decorated to interior design perfection with a rainforest of plants dripping across the background, the British-South Sudanese selector skillfully blends a 45 minute education on a soul-stirring and woozy side of a sound many associate with heavier, harsher tones.

Yaeji ‘Boiler Room: New York’

Ahead of the release of her latest Jersey club-inspired track ‘booboo’, Yaeji returned to Boiler Room at Brooklyn Mirage in August with another sweatbox set powering through jungle and stripped-back club. This mix throws in a handful of her own tracks, as well as a curveball techno rework of the ‘Wii Theme’ song.

Small Crab ‘Daisychain 343’

With plenty of percussive rhythms, warbling basslines and hard grime beats, Dublin’s Small Crab goes in hard on the drum-led bass music in her recent Daisychain mix. “I’m drawn to percussion and deep drum sounds that create a visceral impact,” she says of the mix, complete with tracks from Doctor Jeep, Giulia Tess, and more.

Bklava ‘The Mix 026’

Off the back of the release of their debut mixtape ‘c u l8r’, garage maestro Bklava put together an all-hours mix for Mixmag incorporating their own vocals. Packed with peak-summer bangers from Main Phase, DJ ADHD, and plenty from their own recent project, this mix is Bklava’s perfect pre-party soundtrack. “Pre’s can be the best setup for a night and the music is always important to set the tone, so I hope this mix transpires in that way,” they say.

HiTech ‘Turbo Twat Aerobics (TTA) w/ HITECH on NTS’

If you're looking for something to get your energy up and your leg shaking, look no further, as King Milo, Milf Melly, and 47Chops (the trio that make up HiTech), take you through an hour of sassy, uptempo bangers. Switching seamlessly between the intricate drum patterns of footwork and the heavy bass drops of ghetto house, the Detroit rappers-turned-DJs take a trip to Chicago in their latest NTS show. Expect appearances from ghetto house and footwork royalty including Traxman, DJ Assault, and DJ Rashad, alongside lesser known and up-and-coming producers.

Toribio ‘B.D.A with Toribio on The Lot Radio’

B.D.A is a party run by Brooklyn-based DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Toribio where the motto is "Bring Dat Ass, and your feet will follow.” On his regular show with The Lot Radio, Toribio channels his party concept through your headphones, by traversing across multiple genres, but maintaining the same intention throughout: to make you feel the rhythm and dance. This month’s show starts off slow – as it often does – with jazzy, soulful and Latin selections, before Toribio raises the energy levels with a deeper, groovier, house-based second half.

Affectionately known as ‘Papi’ in the scene and often described as one of the funniest DJs in New York, Toribio’s charming personality always shines through in his shows. Listen out for remixes of Manuel Göttsching’s ‘E2-E4’, Pharoah Sanders’ ‘Love Is Everywhere’ and a crazy Afro house edit of Tyla’s ‘Water’. In other words, get your Shazam ready.

Black Loops ‘Black Loops w/ Vithz on Balamii’

Italian-born, Berlin-based DJ Black Loops, who has garnered a name for himself as one of house music’s most innovative current producers, returned to the Balamii airwaves for his monthly residency, this time bringing with him fellow Italian DJ and producer Vithz. Known respectively for their rare underground cuts spanning Chicago and acid house, this show does not disappoint as Black Loops kicks off for the first hour with some deep and soulful selections (taken from part of his recent all-night set at Rex Club in Paris), leading into Vithz’s hour, in which the DJ moves into harder, heavier house sounds.

Peach in The Lab LDN

Waltzing in with an elite celebration at Mixmag’s Lab LDN this August was the joyful talent, Peach. As part of a special Body Movements festival takeover, Peach cooked us up a treat with some soulful house tunes and energising electro. Ending on what has quickly become her staple track - Hardsoul’s ‘Back Together’ featuring Ron Carroll - Peach asserted she is always the life of the party.

Zack Fox ‘Boiler Room: New York’

Comedian-turned-rapper--turned-actor-turned-DJ? That’s right Zack Fox has opened another new door. This mix in particular highlights why he may actually just be good at everything. With playful remixes to frankly hilarious fading, Zack has us one minute vibing to Faith Evans, the next to ‘Bootys Will Roll’ which is exactly what you think it is.

Saint Ludo ‘Live From Rinse Summer Terrace Party’

With a history of grime, bassline and wobblers that will make your body fizz, Saint Ludo absolutely shells this mix. Nobody else could mix 36 Mafia’s ‘Poppin My Collar’ so flawlessly with Lethal Bizzle’s ‘Pow’ than the Saint of high-energy bass herself. And just to top things off for all you ‘flight fm’ fanatics out there, Ludo mixes this 2024 anthem together with another banger of the summer, Interplanetary Criminal and Blanco’s ‘Races’. This mix is every rap-religious bass-head’s dream come true.
