Six artists you need to check this month

London-born Love Ssega creates infectious, disco-pop inspired by acts like Jungle, Kindness and Metronomy. ‘Pray For Love’ fuses funky Chic basslines and infectious hooks, while upcoming track ‘Perception’ is even more upbeat, full of dance-friendly percussion and Talking Heads-style synths. Before going solo, Ssega co-founded Clean Bandit at uni and sings on their early single ‘Mozart’s House’. Thankfully, he swerved the Marks & Spencer’s and Cortana ads for something much, much more exciting.

Bawrut is a mystery Madrid-based producer shaking up all sorts of shit. His debut track ‘Ciquita’ is the high point of a party distilled into seven minutes of good-time genius, burbling 303, jittering percussion and hooting Latin house chants spiking the track like someone slung pills in the punch. Jackmaster rinsed an early promo on Radio 1, and a new edit is set for 12” release on Ransom Note; at least three more EPs of wonky party acid are ready to drop on Bawrut’s Silencio imprint. DJs from Axel Boman to Optimo are in support.

Wouter S came through the minimal techno scene of his home town of Utrecht, but since 2010 he’s switched tack and become as big and as brash as possible. He’s one of the leading lights in Holland’s ‘powerhouse’ scene, purveying its stonking basslines, relentless hi-hats and chunky kick-drums on bold releases on Street Tracks and Hot Haus Records. Wouter’s sets are similar workouts in raw energy, his 44Bass party becoming known as one of the most raucous nights in Holland, and UK bookings coming thick and fast.

Hubie Davison had a musical childhood. He’s the son of silky-toned singer-songwriter Chris de Burgh, but has eschewed the soft-rock world to pursue deep house and sample-driven disco sounds. ‘Sanctified’ was one of the hot tracks of last summer, championed by the likes of Seth Troxler, Jamie xx and Midland, the latter signing it to his ReGraded label. It sold out instantly, going for £30 on Discogs, and was quickly re-pressed. Hubie may not have caught up to the 45 million records sold by his old man yet, but he’s on the right track.

Tijana T might just be the best-connected person in Serbian dance music. She found fame presenting TV dance music shows in her native country before bringing Nina Kraviz, Actress and Ben Klock to town with her club night, and provided vocals for Marc Houle and Abe Duque. But it’s in the booth that Tijana really shines: check out her set from Belgrade’s MAD Festival, which includes everything from bludgeoning techno to low-key ambient. No surprise she’s picked up gigs at Panoramabar, Space and Razzmatazz.

A chance meeting at a club nearly a decade ago brought these two together, when Luca Luperini, now 32, spotted the impressive DJ skills of Elia Cecchi, now 26. In 2011 the Pisan duo set up the label Yuma, but it wasn’t until much later they decided to pair up and start making music together as Undercatt. Crisp techno tracks like ‘Coral’ offer up plenty of melodic atmosphere, while on their remix of Temper Trap’s ‘Sweet Disposition’ they showcase their deft touch working with a pop hook too.
