Six artists you need to check this month

New York duo Soffi Tukker are bringing worlds together. On single ‘Drinkee’, the pair mix Portuguese lyrics (singer Sophie is bilingual and used to play in a bossa nova trio), with a taut, rocky guitar-line and an underlying squelchy house beat. The pair got together when 25-year-old DJ Tucker Halpern saw 23-year-old Sophie’s band playing, and asked to remix one of the tracks on the spot. He eventually poached Sophie, encouraging her to move to New York full time to form a band with him. We think she made the right decision.

details on NY*AK are scant. We know he’s 36, from Newcastle and has been DJing since he was 17, and that he started dabbling in production five years ago. But most importantly, we know he’s made one of the most impressive EPs of the year so far. ‘Dollar’ is out on Ninja Tune affiliate Technicolour and has won props from Gilles Peterson, Moodymann and Seven Davis Jr. A self-confessed hardware addict, NY*AK’s employed classic equipment to create four groove-laden yet punchy tracks that recall the likes of Theo Parrish and Kenny Dope.

AFTER THE LO-FI productions of last August’s ‘In Defense Of My Muse’ EP, Morly has found her voice on forthcoming EP ‘More Holy’. Against skittering drum patterns and delicate piano melodies, her voice adds sweetness to her sometimes sombre tracks. On tracks like ‘If Only Chords’ she crafts melancholic pop, building from gentle vocals to hit epic peaks. While her productions are often floaty, with the string stabs of ‘By The Polo Pond’ and the bounce of ‘Plucky’ she always manages to keep her sound from drifting into the ether.

After moving from South Korea to London aged 14 to study English, Peggy Gou became immersed in music and fashion. Visa issues forced a move to Berlin after finishing a fashion degree, but links she made in the English capital have been instrumental in her rise. Lessons from Auntie Flo collaborator Esa helped hone her productions skills, while a friendship with Radio Slave led to her richly textured Detroit and Afro-style house debuting on Rekids. Her next outing comes with a remix from Terekke and is certain to dazzle again.

28-year-old German DJ and producer Wigbert Franze has produced under various aliases, including a stint as a progressive trance artist, finally settling on techno and the moniker Wigbert in 2011. With releases on Dubfire’s SCI-TEC, Rawthentic Music and Fuse London’s Infuse sub-label, and support from Adam Beyer, Pan-Pot and Carlo Lio, the 28-year-old also has a storming live show, its most recent outing at Berlin’s Watergate alongside Nicole Moudaber. If you like your techno with flashes of house, he’s for you.

20-year-old producer Elliot Brussalis has over five years at the coalface of music production and DJing under his belt. At 14 he helmed the most popular show on Newport City Radio before becoming the sonic architect for Cardiff grime collective Astroid Boys. His debut EP, on MTA, moves easily between sparse, wobbly grime instrumentals and ethereal, melodic ambient sounds. With nods to artists from The Knife to Kaytranada in the same track, Dellux might be one of the most exciting young producers in the UK.
