Tune of the month

IPG vs Hot Toddy 'Slow Motion Cowboy' (Night Noise Music)

LONGTIME CRAZY P member Chris Todd, aka Hot Toddy, hands his track ‘Slow Motion Cowboy’ over to the International Peoples Gang (known to their mates as Martyn Watson and Ric Peet) for an infectious nu-disco workout that’s being released on Night Noise Music. In particular, this one features some super-heavy Rhodes playing, which alternates with an upfront boogie-synth symphony.

10/10

Joanne Ellis 'Bye Baby' (Z Records)

One for the dusty fingers crew, here, as Sean P takes Joanne Ellis’ classic B-side ‘Bye Baby’ for his new ‘Under The Influence’ compilation. It’s a deep boogie production worked hard by one of London’s finest producers of the last 40 years, Dennis Bovell. You can certainly feel his Barbadian roots and dub influence in this heavy groove that‘s been thumping some low-end to those in the know since 1982.

8/10

Rudy’s Midnight Machine 'By Nature' (FAR Records)

The strongest and most infectious EP so far from Rudy’s Midnight Machine, aka Robin Lee, is a glorious nod towards the golden era of Compass Point. ‘By Nature’ makes you picture the legendary keyboardist Wally Badarou getting down at an outdoor Tom Tom Club afterparty, while the DJ drops the ultimate modern disco productions in the Balearic sunshine.

8/10

Amp Fiddler 'Superficial' (Mark E remix) (Midnight Riot Records)

Funkadelic’s Amp Fiddler gets the Mark E treatment on ‘Superficial’, a track straight off his new album ‘Motor City Booty’. Mark thoroughly dissects the elements of the original and delivers a pulsing dirty disco mix with extra analogue hats, moody pads and just enough of the original vocals to let you know where this beast originally came from.

9/10

Jesse Rudoy 'What U Won’t Do' (Let’s Play House)

High-energy disco doesn’t come much fiercer than this. Straight out of the Paradise Garage book on how to make a super-diva disco anthem, the cheekily titled ‘What U Won’t Do’ by Jesse Rudoy is for boys that like to party in heels. Make no mistake, this one’s going to be getting some late-night pole dancing action down at the Savage disco.

8/10

Bon Voyage Organisation 'Shenzhen V' (We Want Sounds)

The We Want Sounds crew have compiled a serious selection that gives a fresh insight into the heyday of hedonistic disco, a sound that’s currently storming dancefloors from Melboune and Berlin to London and beyond. It’s hard to pick just one beauty, but ‘Shenzhen V’ from the Bon Voyage Organisation holds all the special magic that leading lights such as Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles would be rocking at their Chicago and New York strongholds, but still with some crucial new twists.

9/10

New Holidays 'Maybe So Maybe No' (Athens Of The North)

Another heavy release from Athens Of The North that flies into the outer realms of deep disco soul, and one that some may recognise due to a very respectable cover by Mayer Hawthorn from a few years ago. It now sees a new light of day on this ultra-hot Edinburgh label with a release both on vinyl and digital. It’s a total esoteric club banger in its own right, and sounds glorious with new mastering.
