TUNE OF THE MONTH

Eli Escobar feat Steven klavier 'Back 2 Luv' (BBE)

This is one hell of vocal-disco journey. Built around choppy keys, Steven Clavier’s “back to love” hook
and enough doo-wah scat to get you rocking, it eventually drops way down to a break featuring the totally smashed but still-fresh sounding “back in to time” sample from Jimmy Castor Bunch’s ‘Troglodyte’. From there, Eli filters back in to that vocal hook, and manages to achieve one of those hands-in-the-air, look-up-and-sing-to-the-mirrorball moments we’ve all been caught doing at some point.

9/10

Queen & Disco 'Satisfied' (Royalty Of Funk)

Straight outta downtown Derry, Queen & Disco return with their new 12” ‘Royalty Of Funk Vol 2’, a four-track belter of an EP that brings dancefloor pleasure at every level and tempo. Our tip, ‘Satisfied’, is a prime-time treat and undoubtedly the pick of the bunch: it’s an enticing number with heavily layered and sumptuous vocals that completely and utterly lives up to the promise of its title and leaves us feeling very fulfilled.

8/10

Red Rack’em Bill George (Nettles)

You hear the term ‘future disco’ banded around a lot in this game, but Danny Rackem actually delivers it with ‘Bill George’. The track kicks off with a flamboyant boogie groove that sounds like a collab between Ray Parker Jr and the Purple One of Minneapolis – but just when you think you now where it’s all headed, you’re engulfed in a landscape of deep, heavy pads before that groove returns with some clever chopping.

8/10

South Beach Recycling 'You're The One' (Midnight Riot)

Bournemouth’s South Beach Recycling have released a number of digital EP’s on Midnight Riot, and now the label is putting out their vinyl debut, too, as part of its new 12” series. ‘You’re The One’ is a big-time workout that flies straight down a starlit boogie highway. Teasing us with filtered loops, glorious string lines and pumping beats throughout, it’ll be a real treat for lovers of Horse Meat Disco, The Revenge & Tiger & Woods – this is the real disco fever, something that’s so irrestible when delivered with a new modern sound.

9/10

Freekwency 'Your Touch (First Touch remix)' (Hot Shot)

Freekwency are no strangers to a good groove. Having previously released their debut album on Ism Records, they’re now back with a new EP, ‘Your Touch’, that features the almighty Ale Chambers on vocals. Authentic to the core, it gets twisted again by First Touch’s boogie refix that harks back to the true 80s spirit with touches of early Chicago house, but still with a sleazy slow grind.

8/10

Dionigi 'Sit Back' (QND Philosophy)

Baldelli and Dionigi team up for the first release on Marco’s brand new QND Philosophy label. You know you’re in for a treat from these guys as soon as you see their names together: they’ve become synonymous with superior production and pushing the boundaries of that cosmic sound, and they always deliver. Get ready, then, for ‘Sit Back’, which is another cosmic ship heading your way.

9/10

Loframes 'Since You’ve Gone' (Midnight In Paris)

Loframes’ effortlessly stylish new single ‘Since You’ve Gone’ finds them stepping away from the dancefloor to mend their broken hearts, but with guest vocals from French nu-disco star Anoraak it still has enough drive to make any DJ sit up and get involved. Emotional turmoil has never sounded so luxurious.
