Nina Las Vegas on Diplo stealing her style for the Grammys
The Australian DJ's Prada swag left a lasting impression
My sneakers are Prada Cloudbusts. This is the second pair I’ve had – I wear them absolutely every day. They’ve kind of become my signature, but I’m living out of a suitcase 300 days a year which is why these are so good. I can wear them day or night, on a plane, at dinner or when playing a show.
I ruined my first pair of Cloudbusts by wearing them in the snow in Montreal. I’m an idiot — you should never wear Prada sneakers in the snow! I was heartbroken. I was gifted the first pair, and then, when I wanted to get a second I looked at the price and realised they’re like a thousand dollars!
I always love to ask myself, ‘What would M.I.A. wear?’ or ‘what would Lily Allen wear?’ M.I.A. can wear vintage with new designers and her outfits are always just faultless. She’s on everyone’s moodboard! And when Lily Allen first came out wearing a Dior dress with Nike Air Max I thought that was just the coolest thing.
My family is Egyptian, so when I went to Cairo 10 years ago I wanted some jewellery from there. I went to a store with my aunt and we picked this necklace, thinking it said: “Make a fast decision and run with it,” meaning ‘live in the moment’. A month ago, someone was like, “Oh, you’re wearing the Quran!” It’s beautiful, even if it’s not my faith. I won’t stop wearing it.
This yellow dress is by a brand called Collusion and I got it in the sale section at ASOS. I always seem to buy the items no-one else wants! I like this dress as I want pieces that will photograph well but that are also good to DJ in. It’s airy and nice to move around in. Underneath the dress I wear bike shorts and a Nike crop top.
I love my rings. My friend, who’s a designer for Vuitton now, was at Margiela five years ago and took me shopping. I didn’t have any money at the time, but splurged on a sick ring. It was about $700, but I was like, “Jasmine knows what’s up.” All the jewels have come off now, but she’s going to help me get it fixed.
I can wear the cheapest outfit and have messy hair, but then walk into Goodhood or Dover Street Market in London and everyone’s like ‘Still, she’s wearing expensive shoes’.
These socks are old Opening Ceremony. I’ve worn them to death, but I love them. I think people should spend money on socks. They can really make an outfit, and people don’t realise it.
I supported Diplo at Igloofest in Montreal and I was wearing Prada pants, these Cloudbust shoes and an Axel Arigato jumper. He said ‘You’re really stylin’ right now!” The next time I saw him at The Grammys he was basically wearing the same outfit with my Prada pants but in blue!
