Mr Ties
The selector shows why she's the life and soul of the party
Having gotten into electronic music during his teenage years, Mr Ties moved to Berlin from Rome and played early sets at Berghain's Cantina before starting a small party at ://about blank on a Wednesday when it was still an illegal venue. The address wasn't given and it started out as an intimate rave for 150 people before the club closed for a while. Once it reopened, Homopatik was placed on monthly Fridays and the rest is history.
Despite being routed firmly in the underground and with her tastes extremely eclectic, just one search of Ties' name on Google turns up a wealth of incredible mixes and interviews that gives an insight into the mind behind the rave. Her most recent Boiler Room set was a joyous four-hour Mardi Gras day extravaganza from Sydney, where the crowd is a hedonistic mix of drag queens and up-for-it ravers. Ties is wearing nothing but a black leather bondage outfit and her radiant dance moves are only matched by the gleaming smile across her face. She often jumps on the mic and waves her vinyl above her head proving that no matter where she is or where she's playing, she gives herself to the dance.
Although few and far between, her productions are evident of her choppy, genre-splicing ways as well. We recently premiered his House of Ties remix of 'Hous-O-Matik Hom-O-Patik', an anthem created by B.A.D.S, the triple-threat team of Radio Slave, Spencer Parker and Mr Ties. Her edit takes the already classic jam and turns it into an all-out house ripper. Huge saxaphone riffs, drops that are teased and tinkered with and a bassline that's as mischievous as the personality.
When we saw her play at Bloc Weekender 2015 she turned in one of the sets of the weekend and again it boils down to her playing as she feels on the day. She blurted out fizzy electro and stompy house to a near-empty room with as much enthusiasm as if it were a full space. Naturally before long her infectious movement and party-starting tunes got people involved, a testament to her style.
As for her In Session mix, she's turned in an hour of exactly what we expected but like nothing we could have imagined. A vinyl-only selection of house, disco, techno through impeccable live mixing follows and it's been on repeat in the Mixmag office. It doesn't matter what you're into or what your inclination is, Ties has something for you and he fosters an inclusive, electric atmosphere. We hope that never changes.
