In Session: Nervo
A mix from the world-dominating duo
Over the last five years EDM has become the most divisive genre in dance music. Whether it grinds your gears or ticks all your boxes, there's absolutely no denying its worldwide appeal.
For this week's In Session, we concentrate on two sisters that have been at the very top of their game since they exploded onto the EDM scene. Miriam and Olivia Nervo are the Australian duo who've taken the globe by storm with their mammoth productions, expert songwriting skills and high-octane DJ sets.
They're no strangers to main stage sets but their beginnings in songwriting is what initially got people excited. They've written for the likes of Rachel Stevens, Ke$ha and The Pussycat Dolls, with the duo responsible for the latter's 'If I Was'. But the twins would go from behind-the-scenes talents to worldwide phenomenons.
They signed to Sony at the age of 18 and from then on they've only had one thing locked in their sights: world domination.
Their tracks amass millions of hits with ease and they've been a staple of festival line-ups for years. While their productions are undeniably rooted within EDM, they have a focused pop sensibility and love of euphoria-inducing moments.
If you take one thing away from watching the LED-laden spectacular that is their Tomorrowland Brazil performance, then it's that their ability as performers is just as prevalent as their skills as producers. They work the crowd, show an abundance of energy and interact on a level that's pretty impressive considering the fact that they're stood in front of a crowd big enough to give anyone the shakes.
Although EDM is their main point of call, Nervo clearly know and appreciate what's happening within the wider dance music community, something that a lot of their peers don't seem to grasp. Last year we premiered Anna's remix of their track 'Haute Mess' and the duo said that they wanted to put forward a remix that was aimed at the underground. They succeeded.
Anna's edit was a dark, brooding tech-house monster that featured "ominous bass rumbles, expertly timed hi-hats and enough demonic pace to whip up a storm." This hand-picked selection from the siblings may not have made it into their main stage sets but it certainly showed an element of acknowledgement of a sound that's bubbling beneath theirs.
Nervo's induction to In Session showcases a high flying hybrid of house, big room and EDM monsters with cuts from Eric Prydz, Late Nite Tuff Guy, Patrick Topping, Green Velvet and Riton. It's time to join the Nervo revolution.
