Lab On Location: Mama Roux's
Mixmag and Coors bring a special one-off party to Birmingham’s favourite haunt with a killer line-up
The Lab is Mixmag and Coors’ weekly live event where we showcase the finest DJs direct from our world-famous office party and other intimate locations around the country highlighting the UK’s most exciting music scenes. This time, Mixmag takes the Lab On Location to Birmingham.
On Saturday, May 28, we’re excited to showcase Mark Birch, George Davis, Molly Morgan, Ning-Ning Li, Dupex, and GOODCHILD at Mama Roux's.
Down in the depths of Digbeth, you can find the shimmering beacon of Mama Roux’s: Birmingham’s eclectic playground for lovers of all things house music, glitter, and burlesque dancing. To celebrate the long-running residents of this special nightclub-turned-live venue, we’re inviting six key players into the Lab On Location who’ve helped this club to spread its wings since opening in 2017. Originally brought together as a stage for Ibiza’s iconic Circoloco, Mama Roux’s ventured into live music and now reigns supreme for its impressive selection of artists - from Little Simz to Slowthai, Jamie Jones to Patrick Topping. With a brand new burlesque night titled House Of Mama underway and the venue’s fresh new act Mama Roux’s House Music Orchestra setting up shop, 2022 is looking like an unstoppable year for the Digbeth venue.
Check out a list of Mama Roux’s performers and residents heading through the doors on May 28 for a very special showcase night:
Mark Birch
From percussionist to house DJ, Mark Birch’s trajectory from avid drummer to producer has landed him a regular slot at Mama Roux’s. “Mama Roux’s is a great place to play. I always look forward to it every weekend, I’ve made some great friends whilst working there,” he says.
George Davis
With a less set in stone genre of choice, George Davis enjoys playing everything from old skool hip-hop to modern electronics. Backing the ‘confetti drops’ at Mama Roux’s as his favourite pastime, George notes that “the atmosphere in the inside room is unmatched. Mama Roux’s brings something completely different and refreshing to the scene in Birmingham.”
Molly Morgan
From the age of 7, Molly Morgan’s voice has made the airwaves all over, from festivals to theatres, venues to nightclubs. When she embarked on a professional career from age 16, Molly found her passion in dance music and has since aided productions with her impressive vocals. “Mama Roux’s is the most fun I’ve ever had on stage, the energy there is unbeatable,” she says.
Ning-Ning Li
Trading in the classical gear for a taste of the Birmingham clubland, Ning-Ning Li has been a staple in the city since her time with the Birmingham Conservatoire in 2012, now favouring nightlife with an experimental edge. Her favourite moments on stage at Mama Roux’s, she says, is “witnessing the crowd’s enjoyment”.
Dupex
Mama Roux’s resident Dupex first honed his craft in Spain curating boat parties for the likes of Ministry Of Sound and MTV. Since taking his sets to Ibiza and beyond, Dupex remains a legend of the Birmingham underground. “There’s zero bad vibes when you enter Mama’s. No trouble, no pretentiousness, no worries,” he says.
GOODCHILD
Performing on behalf of Mixmag on May 28 is our honorary all-star, GOODCHILD. The Brighton-born, Birmingham-based DJ and producer is best known for high-energy sets and a set of colourful specs. Touring all over, GOODCHILD lands in Mama Roux’s this month for this very special edition of the Lab On Location. “There really is nowhere like Mama Roux’s, it’s more than a venue - it’s an experience,” he says.
