June: 10 big tunes you need to hear this month

Summer anthems incoming

1 Solitary Dancer

'Transmitting To Heaven' (Graded)

Solitary Dancer, for the uninitiated, is the Montreal-based producer whose ‘Desire & Apathy’ EP was supported by Ben UFO, Axel Boman and Mixmag alike. This, his second release for Graded, may well be the biggest, baddest eleven-minute electro-tech-rave jam you’ll hear all month.

2 Hot Since 82

'Evolve Or Die' (Moon Harbour)

Hot Since 82 is now the proud owner of a Friday night Ibiza residency at Pacha – since that early Mixmag cover, his rise has been nothing short of stratospheric. And now he’s got a summer smash waiting in the wings, thanks to this Carl Craig-inspired cut for Matthias Tanzmann’s label.

3 Shanti Celeste

'Make Time' (Idle Hands)

Back in Big Tunes for the second time in three months, Celeste continues to impress with another emotional two-tracker on her own Idle Hands imprint. The super-percussive lead track ‘Make Time’, with its mumbling “let’s make some time” vocal refrain, has been on repeat all month.

4 Deetron

'Take Me Higher' (Character)

We’ve been tipping Swiss producer Deetron time and time again recently. With his latest EP for Character, we’re truly spoilt for choice: there are five new tracks here. Of those, the surging diva-vocal houser ‘Take Me Higher’ lives up to its name superbly.

5 Andrea Oliva

'We Trust' (Hot Creations)

Returning to Big Tunes after last summer’s Black Box-inspired ‘Scream’ (supported by absolutely everyone in Ibiza), Andrea Oliva follows his recent releases on Relief with a two-track EP. Of the pair, we’re saying ‘We Trust’ is the one you’ll be hearing at Paradise.

6 Matthew Herbert

'Brand New Love' (Special Request remix) (Hypercolour)

Matthew Herbert and Paul Woolford together on Hypercolour: it couldn’t really go wrong, could it? With newcomer Zilla providing sterling vocals and Special Request giving it the complete Van Helden, this’ll be huge.

7 Radio Slave

'Screaming Hands' (Tuff City Kids Dreamscape mix) (Rekids)

Yes, we know that Tuff City Kids get quite a few mentions on this page – but when the quality’s this good, who are we to argue? Here, Gerd and Phillip take on Radio Slave classics ‘Bell Clap Dance’ and ‘Screaming Hands’; the Dreamscape mix of the latter is our tip.

8 Redshape

'Shift' (Present)

Redshape’s latest really is a fantastic thing. A fierce two track EP led by the warped DC10-inspired instrumental ‘Shift’, it’s backed with the equally driving techno clanger ‘Drive’. But it’s acidic ‘Shift’ from the German producer that will really turn heads.

9 DJ Shadow feat Nas

'Systematic' (Mass Appeal)

“Hold your breath for 15 seconds!” The best thing about nasty Nas is he never went out of fashion. And while DJ Shadow has ebbed and flowed over the years, this is most emphatic production and single salvo return since ‘Six Days’... with or without Soulwax.

10 Foreign Concept

'When You’re Alone' (LSB remix) (Critical)

The very definition of ‘screwface’ for d’n’b fans, Foreign Concept is a Brighton producer who’s been making moves since 2009. Mixmag.net premiered this LSB mix online last month, and it absolutely smashed it. No wonder.
