In Session: Breakbot

An artist whose creative output screams "disco will never die," Thibaut Berland, best known by his stage name, Breakbot, has gifted innumerable dancefloors with a bounty of carefree funk. Hailing from France, his earnest and silky retro sound caught the attention of Ed Banger Recordings back in 2009. Once signed to the label, Thibaut created his breakthrough EP 'Baby I'm Yours' - a global music phenomenon that transformed himself into a beloved mainstay of the lauded music label.

Piloted by hip basslines, juicy guitar riffs and glistening vocal work, Breakbot's radiant sound has amassed millions of plays and turned him into a sought-after headliner all around the globe. In addition to his brilliant originals, Breakbot's white-hot remixes of tracks by the likes of Röyksopp, Digitalism and Chromeo did wonders in further solidifying his reputation as a bonafide modern disco purveyor.

To round out his sound and give it more swagger, Thibaut has consistently called on his bandmate Irfane to make use of his melodic and dynamic voice. In 2015, Irfane officially joined Breakbot for what would be their second album, 'Still Waters' - a critically acclaimed LP that saw the duo enter new sonic territory by incorporating more futuristic synth accelerations into their funkafied routine.

After a brief hiatus, Irfane linked up with Breakbot once again for their 2018 EP 'Another You' - a deep four-track dive into an inescapably cool expanse of cosmic sounds. With every lick and turn, Breakbot's grooves are the perfect remedy for any dull dancefloor. Easily accessible to all, the music and its infectious attitude never falters from its missionto keep the disco spirit alive and well.

As Ed Banger celebrates its 15 year anniversary this year, Mixmag thought it an appropriate time to tap Breakbot for a starry-eyed and quirky submission to our In Session mix series.
