Get to know Lauren Lo Sung, Liverpool's sumptuous rolling house producer
The 25-year-old producer and selector is on the cusp of greatness
In terms of dance music, there aren’t many places in the UK with as rich a heritage as Liverpool. It’s given birth to some of the UKs most iconic club nights including Cream, Chibuku and Circus, and artists like Greg Wilson and Yousef. And its latest hometown hero is more than aware of the city’s dance music past.
“I’ve always been into house music,” says Lauren Lo Sung over the phone. “I’ve got a brother and sister who are 12 and 18 years older than me who were going to Cream from when I was born!”
Lauren grew up immersed in dance music culture. While most kids were interested in Pokémon cards and playing in the park, she was already besotted with house. She got her first set of “beginner decks” from her parents on her 11th birthday. Things got a bit more serious when she was at university in Manchester and got the chance to launch her own club night.
“My friend found a pub with a basement and they wanted someone to put on parties,” she says. “At first I was unsure, but eventually I just thought ‘fuck it’.”
LOLiFE was born, and after first attracting a crowd largely made up of uni pals, word spread and it became a must-do night in the city. While it’s pulled in some solid guests including No Artificial Colours and Jordan Peak, the main attraction is Lauren herself. She’s almost always on the bill, and now that she’s gathered some speed with a sound that blends shoulder-rolling groove with bumping, pumping percussion, it’s clear to see why people have been flocking there.
Musically, Lauren’s hit her stride. After years learning the ropes of music production, her releases are becoming hotly anticipated months before they drop. After becoming friends with DJ Steaw, she was tasked with creating the debut release for his new label, House Puff.
The result was ‘Tresor’, her most refined work to date. A track that gleefully merges low slung basslines with a sumptuous rolling progression, it was so anticipated that a Facebook video showing her play just a snippet of the track got nearly 200,000 plays.
Where next then? With gigs at Hï Ibiza, a call-up from Hector to join his Vatos Locos stable and a calendar packed with European gigs, it seems the years spent building a reputation as a local resident are finally paying off. You never know, we might get a few Cream classics along the way too!
Lauren Lo Sung plays In The Dark at Hï Ibiza on August 31
