The Birmingham artist got turned on to the dark art of ghostwriting aged 17 and ended up making countless tracks that made their way out into the bassline and speed garage scenes of the mid noughties.
In at the deep end, he cut his teeth at the production desk early on and his work writing for other people also educated him on how fast 'n' loose the music industry can be. In a revealing interview with Thump, he said that he decided to put his name to the tracks that he'd made after watching others make a mint off music that he'd never be credited for.
Not that he's bitter – far from it. While he still co-produces, his obvious talent for pearling out a banger means he's moved out of the shadows and is forging a career all his own. A true grafter (he says he spends mostChris days in the studio and produces up to 300 tunes a year), the product of the 26 year old's labour is really beginning to crystallise.
He made headlines by jumping into the studio with Skrillex after a gig in LA earlier this year, is making sought-after bass artillery as one half of Cause & Affect, has found home on fellow low-end house lovers Kry Wolf and Shadow Child's Food Music label and is taking on the world by collaborating with long-time studio partner Hannah Wants. The pair have been signed to Ultra, a power move if ever we saw one, with a single due on the imprint late this month.
But perhaps most importantly of all, Chris Lorenzo (alongside Wants) is responsible for spearheading the jackin' sound (which he likes to call house & bass), which formulated in the Midlands at the tail end of bassline and garage's popularity and is now taking over dancefloors across the UK and beyond. Thanks to the UK's love of heavy basslines, it's pollinated far beyond Birmingham and with the Ultra deal freshly inked, we're betting on ravers across the pond lapping it up too.
Chris has turned in an exclusive In Session mix for us, one he says is designed for the height of summer and to be listened to on poolside. Yes mate!
