Around The World: The best Daft Punk live footage
Roll back the years with these vids
Will Daft Punk tour this year? That's the question everyone is asking at the moment. A Reddit thread last September sparked rumours of a 2017 tour, followed by talk of a slot at Glastonbury, but Emily Eavis soon squashed that. It's riling people up on our Facebook page and that recent cameo at the Grammys didn't help matters, either.
Amid calls for a new tour, 20 years on from their debut album 'Homework', it seems like they could be up to something if the pop-up shop in Los Angeles is anything to go by.
Touring or not, we've compiled a bunch of clips to serve as a reminder of what they're capable of when playing live.
Even Further Festival, 1996
Believe it or not, there was a time when Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Man played without wearing robot helmets. This footage of Thomas at Even Further Festival in Wisconsin is more up close and personal than most, as he blazes through a bunch of electro. He's no slouch on the decks, either.
Los Angeles, 1997
You'll most likely be familiar with this one if you follow Mixmag's movements on Facebook. In January, we posted the clip of them performing 'Rollin' & Scratchin' as part of the 20-year celebrations for their debut album 'Homework'. Filmed at the Mayan Theatre, Los Angeles in December 1997 (the final date of the Daftendirektour), it captures over eight minutes of raw, electrifying pace from the pair and it's got the buzzing, trippy visuals to match.
Coachella, 2006
Talk about kicking off a tour in style. Coachella was the first date of Alive 2006/2007 and the boys made sure it was a spectacle. Backed by towering red geometric visuals and stood within a pyramid in this, they lashed out 'Prime Time Of Your Life' from the album 'Human After All', showering ravers at the Cali festival with those cyborg vocals. The robot outfits were out by this point, of course.
Alive, 2007
"Only Daft Punk can remix Daft Punk," one YouTube comment reads on this clip from the Alive 2006/2007 tour. It's not a bad shout. We doubt anyone else but the duo could make such an epic coming together of 'Around The World' and 'Harder Better Faster Stronger'. Paired with the rainbow of colours and incessant strobes, it's a belter for both the eyes and the ears.
Japan, 2007
'Robot Rock', 'Around The World', 'Harder Better Faster Stronger'. All in a row, no break. Obviously the crowd in Japan went nuts, judging by the silhouettes of hands in the air and bodies bopping up and down. It's probably not for the faint-hearted.
Wireless Festival, 2007
Come July 2017 and it would have been 10 years since Daft Punk last played in the UK, when they performed at Wireless Festival in London and Leeds over two days. A decade is a long time, but we're sure those at Hyde Park on June 16, 2007 remember every single minute of this live rendition of 'Homework' track 'Da Funk'. If not, re-watch it below to refresh your memory. And most likely make you wish you back there now.
