Club culture has always sat uneasily with institutions of power, and a lot of doom and gloom permeates our scene regarding unfair club closures and gentrification squeezing underground venues out of existence. But 2017 was a refreshing year, and we celebrated the launch of a host of brilliant new clubs that have sprung up and provided first-rate dancing locations. Check out some of the new spots in the gallery below.

Le Diskret, Lyon - An industrial cavern in eastern France that has booked the likes of Rødhåd and Kerri Chandler.

CRANE, Birmingham - So Brum's scu:club didn't really work out, but luckily for England's second city a 12,000 square feet new space opened soon after.

Blitz, Munich - With an impressive Void system and the Zenker Brothers, Skee Mask and Stenny serving as residents, Blitz is quickly becoming a leading techno institution in Germany. No mean feat.

Five Miles, London - This intimate club showcases the finest in the more experimental end of electronic music.

Garage Noord, Amsterdam - Orpheu The Wizard and Suzanne Kraft have played nighttime bashes at this restuarant-meets-club.

Void, Mykonos - It's called Void, but the system is a heavy-hitting Funktion-One.

PKHS, Tilburg - 1,200-capacity spread across three floors and a roof terrace, showcasing the finest local and international talents.

JACK, Amsterdam - Inclusive LGBTI-focused spot JACK allows people to freely express themselves.

Hall, Tallinn - Estonia continued its surge towards becoming one of Europe's top clubbing destinations as bare-walled Hall opened and booked the likes of Sotofett and Ninos Du Brasil.

The Gärten, Beirut - Überhaus expanded with a magnificent new spot that has hosted Jeff Mills and Raresh.

Elsewhere, New York - A 24,000 square foot venue that asserts New York doesn't do things by halves.

Hï, Ibiza - Taking over Space, Hï had a lot to live up to, and delivered impressively.

The Sonic Jungle, New York - A "cultural oasis" that goes all out to stimulate mental and physical senses.

WAS, Utrecht - This "pop-up club" was due to close on New Year's Day 2018, but has been such a success its now planning to roll on long into the new year.

XE 54, Melbourne - XE 54's opening affirmed Melbourne's position as Australia's dance music heartland.

E1, London - Having opened on New Year's Eve with a line-up featuring Ben Klock and Maceo Plex, the early signs are good.

Society, Paris - A classy affair in la Ville des Lumières.

objekt klein a, Dresden - Three rooms of diverse sounds make objekt klein a a must-visit club.

Het Magazijn, The Hague - Funktion-One + 150-capacity = sweatpit.

Printworks, London - Our club of the year fired out the blocks.

Yard Open Air, Bristol - The day party revolution rolled forward with Motion opening a new open air space, Yard.

Here I Love You, El Paso - Juan Maclean played the opening party of this Texan spot and the quality has remained steady since.

RED58, Barcelona - The booth in this dark and moody location has been helmed by Nicolas Lutz and Moritz Von Oswald to name but two.

Terminal 7, Paris - Situated on the top floor of the Paris Expo Porte De Versailles, Terminal 7 has breathtaking views both outside and in, with dazzling light displays.

The Bunk3r, Sydney - The Bunk3r became the go-to retreat for revellers escaping the oppression of Sydney's lockout laws.
