Clubland is thriving
Club culture has always sat uneasily with institutions of power, and a lot of doom and gloom permeates our scene regarding unfair club closures and gentrification squeezing underground venues out of existence. But 2017 was a refreshing year, and we celebrated the launch of a host of brilliant new clubs that have sprung up and provided first-rate dancing locations. Check out some of the new spots in the gallery below.
Le Diskret, Lyon - An industrial cavern in eastern France that has booked the likes of Rødhåd and Kerri Chandler.
CRANE, Birmingham - So Brum's scu:club didn't really work out, but luckily for England's second city a 12,000 square feet new space opened soon after.
Blitz, Munich - With an impressive Void system and the Zenker Brothers, Skee Mask and Stenny serving as residents, Blitz is quickly becoming a leading techno institution in Germany. No mean feat.
Five Miles, London - This intimate club showcases the finest in the more experimental end of electronic music.

Hall, Tallinn - Estonia continued its surge towards becoming one of Europe's top clubbing destinations as bare-walled Hall opened and booked the likes of Sotofett and Ninos Du Brasil.
The Gärten, Beirut - Überhaus expanded with a magnificent new spot that has hosted Jeff Mills and Raresh.
Elsewhere, New York - A 24,000 square foot venue that asserts New York doesn't do things by halves.
Hï, Ibiza - Taking over Space, Hï had a lot to live up to, and delivered impressively.
The Sonic Jungle, New York - A "cultural oasis" that goes all out to stimulate mental and physical senses.
WAS, Utrecht - This "pop-up club" was due to close on New Year's Day 2018, but has been such a success its now planning to roll on long into the new year.
XE 54, Melbourne - XE 54's opening affirmed Melbourne's position as Australia's dance music heartland.
E1, London - Having opened on New Year's Eve with a line-up featuring Ben Klock and Maceo Plex, the early signs are good.

RED58, Barcelona - The booth in this dark and moody location has been helmed by Nicolas Lutz and Moritz Von Oswald to name but two.
