Watch Lady Starlight explain the inner workings of her ferocious live techno sets

The American musician talks through the technical side of her shows

In a new video from Catalyst Berlin, American DJ, producer, and musical performer Lady Starlight, talks through the inner workings of her mighty live techno performances.

The 12-minute interview, produced and curated by Nadia Says of Your Moms Agency, documents the musician’s background, covering topics such as her relationship with Lady Gaga, her big break onto the electronic music scene, and her advice to up-and-coming musicians.

“For emerging artists, my biggest piece of advice is to take every opportunity that you can. You never know which opportunity can lead to which amazing thing,” she says.

Lady Starlight also gives a live performance and workshop where she talks through her live setup explaining the ebbs and flows of a dynamic, impromptu live performance.

Armed with her analogue dream machine and the Elektron Rytm, Lady Starlight explains the inspirations and motivations behind her live sets while talking through the equipment.

“What I’ve been doing this whole time from my live set is trying to get rid of things, not adding anything,” she says during the workshop. “Here’s all this stuff, what can I absolutely get rid of? It’s super important to think about what you’re really doing here.”

Lady S also talks us through her Analog Rytm, which includes a kick drum and oscillator that she uses for sampling.

Through her ferocious live techno sets, Lady Starlight has worked with some of the biggest and best musicians traversing every genre - from pop legend Lady Gaga to metal bands including Iron Maiden and Slayer.

“The biggest catalyst for my creativity is really wanting to get across what I’m feeling and what’s important to me and something that expresses my values. To be honest and contribute honesty to other artists, other female artists, young people, people who need role models,” she explains.
