Uber's licence in London will not be renewed

TfL has announced it will not be renewing Uber’s licence after declaring that the company failed to demonstrate that it is "fit and proper" to hold a licence in London.

In an online statement, the transport body wrote: "TfL considers that Uber's approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications."

The American company failed in reporting information on serious criminal offences, medical certificates, Enhanced Disclose and Barring Service (DBS) and its use of Greyball, software that blocks other from gaining full access to the app.

Under ‘The Private Hire Vehicles (London) Act 1998’, Uber will have 21 days to appeal against the licensing decision made against them. It can continue to operate until then.

If the appeal is unsuccesful, Uber’s licence will expire on September 30.
