The Beating Heart project travels to South Africa for a fundraiser

‘South Africa Volumes 1 – 5’ will be released throughout the summer

Beating Heart is back and has focused its attention on the vibrant sounds of South Africa, with a little help from Afro Carnival, SNØW, Tru Fonix and Coen on ‘South Africa Vol. 1’.

It’s a follow-up of their critically successful ‘Malawai’ compilation, which saw original field recordings given new life by the likes of My Nu Leng, Rudimental, Throwing Shade and Machinedrum. This time around, the International Library of African music has opened its archives to share recordings documented by the late Hugh Tracey back in the 1950s.

Profits from the series will be used to support the Women’s Legal Centre, as well as the Access Music Project in Grahamstown, where students will learn about their heritage and music production, using the ILAM archive and donated equipment.

With the rest of the series expected this summer, check out 'South Africa - Vol.1' here.
