Steam Radio joins forces with Above the Line to launch series ‘Underexposed’

To launch the series, there will be film screenings and DJ sets which will celebrate International Women’s Day.

Manchester’s Steam Radio has teamed up with fellow Mancunian film night Above the Line to curate a new series entitled ‘Underexposed’, which showcases work from underrepresented directors.

To kick off, there will be a showcase of four female-directed films in Manchester’s Ducie Street Warehouse’s mini cinema throughout March to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Each of the films have been selected by Steam’s resident DJs - and after the showing, the DJ who selected the showing will play a DJ set inspired by the movie.

"Part of what we love about radio at Steam is the chance to share music and other interests in a personal and contextualised way,” explains station manager Hannah O’Gorman. “With music for example, being shown a song on air by someone who loves it creates a very different listening experience to a faceless algorithm guessing what you might like.

"We want to bring that ethos to Underexposed so each film will feature a short introduction from the woman who selected it, and will be followed by a film inspired DJ set from that woman. So, stick around after for some tunes and chat!"

The idea for the concept arose when Above the Line joined Steam for a soundtrack-inspired residency: and with the approach of International Women’s Day, the concept of celebrating women in the film industry was proposed.

One of Above the Line’s organisers, Rebecca Power, expands: "Underexposed is an in-depth look at the underappreciated creatives in the film industry, celebrating marginalised voices in these communities and bringing new perspectives to the way we perceive the world of cinema."

The first showing occurred on March 3, showcasing the film ‘Queen & Slim’, with an introduction and DJ set from Mix-Stress. The next - taking place on March 10 - will be showcasing ‘The Fall Of Western Civilisation Part II: The Metal Years’, selected by Fat Britney, who will also provide a DJ set afterwards.

With the screenings being in honour of International Women’s Day, all funds raised are directed towards MASH (Manchester Action on Street Health) - a charity that stands with women involved in sex work and helps them to experience good health, safety and emotional wellbeing. Tickets are £7 and you can grab yours here.
