SoundCloud removes documentary about Bristol after being rinsed by the city's music scene

The short film was criticised for not representing the diversity of the city's musical community

SoundCloud has faced a backlash for a documentary about Bristol uploaded to the platform’s Facebook page.

The 5-minute film, which was described by SoundCloud as “a look inside Bristol's thriving music scene”, received a stream of negative comments today, and has now been removed from the internet by the streaming service after amassing over 300,000 views.

Much of the anger directed towards the clip was due to the lack of equal representation and diversity, with segments including white student radio hosts discussing the city’s Jamaican community, and very little scope of the musical activity in the city beyond its house and disco nights.

“[The Bristol music scene] is so varied. There’s a massive bass music scene, and grime music scene, that personally doesn’t really appeal to me,” says one of the disco DJs interviewed in the documentary.

Comments posted under the video on Facebook included “so Bristol is just white middle class students?”, and remarks on the lack of “Bristol accents” and insight into genres such as gabber and dubstep.

Tweets posted about the clip have called it a “a complete whitewash of the Bristol music scene”, “a horrific piece of crap to represent Bristol” and a “one dimensional vanilla portrayal of the city”.

SoundCloud has now taken down the video, but a Facebook user has reuplaoded it on their personal page. Watch it below.
