Sons of Kemet set to break up after end of 2022 summer tour

The Shabaka Hutchings led jazz quartet have performed together for 10 years

After 10 years together jazz quartet Sons of Kemet are splitting up.

Once they complete their 2022 tour "Black To The Future," the group will no longer perform as a band.

Led by saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, the South London quartet also includes tuba player Theon Cross and percussionists Edward Wakili-Hick and Tom Skinner.

News of the band splitting was announced via social media, with a post that reads: “After 10 years we have decided that from the end of our scheduled 2022 shows we will be closing this chapter of the band’s life for the foreseeable future. We’re excited to play our remaining gigs for you and to make this summer a fitting send-off.”

Their last performances will include tonight's gig at Barcelona-based festival Primavera Sound as well as other dates across July and August in the UK, Europe, and the United States.

In 2021, Sons of Kermet graced the cover of Mixmag which saw leader Shabaka Hutchings speak about free expression and their third album 'Black To The Future' that followed their 2018 Mercury-nominated ‘Your Queen Is A Reptile’.
