Skepta wins the Mercury Prize

It's a proud moment for the grime community as Skepta takes home the honour of the 2016 Mercury Prize.

He was awarded the £25,000 win for his politically-charged 'Konnichiwa' album, which discussed the artist's frustrations about police harassment and with British politics.

Skepta beat the late David Bowie, who was nominated for his final album 'Blackstar', which released just several days before his passing.

"I was like, 'Let's do it for ourselves'," Skepta, born Junior Adenuga, said in his acceptance speech. "All these songs, we've travelled the world - no record label, nothing. We just did this for us, but the love is very appreciated."

He was joined on stage by his team and his mum. Upon his acceptance, he shouted out fellow nominee Kano before thanking his mum and dad, as well as everyone else's, who "gave us that voice in our head that's talking to keep us in line to keep us in check."
