Scuba announces 'Digital Underground' mixtape, shares single 'Move Like Shadows'

Available on his imprint Hotflush, celebrating its 20th anniversary, the mixtape takes on acid house and early hardcore eras

Scuba has unveiled his forthcoming mixtape, 'Digital Underground', and this week shared the second single taken from the record, 'Move Like Shadows'.

'Move Like Shadows' is a reimagining of an early 90s hitter, with its vocal hook bound onto a more delicate backbone: think classic euphoria.

Released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his imprint Hotflush Recordings, where the mixtape is housed and set for full release on November 10, 'Digital Underground' features versions of tracks from the artist's two part vinyl-only series 'Hardcore Heaven', comprising of takes on the acid house and early hardcore era.

Across its 12 tracks, the tape builds upon 'Hardcore Heaven' into adjusted editions and extra tracks, with aforementioned odes to acid house and hardcore melting into sounds of breaks, techno, and occasional pointers towards early-2 step.

“The 'Digital Underground' project really came from a bit of fun in the studio - making a lot of really sketchy rave tracks, maybe spending a morning on each one and just messing around with the classic early 90s sound palette of pre-94 hardcore, early jungle, acid house, techno… all the good stuff," Scuba tells Mixmag.

"‘Move Like Shadows’ has a bit of early-2000s broken beat in there too, it's a fun track with a cool vocal and a big 808... it's not trying to be anything it's not.”
