Rare pieces from disco icon Arthur Russell's collection on display in Brooklyn
A snapshot into the life of the influential producer
The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is hosting an exhibition highlighting the work of legendary electronic music pioneer Arthur Russell.
The exhibition, dubbed Do What I Want: Selections from the Arthur Russell Papers, will display a collection of rare pieces, including Russell’s notes, scores and tapes that were recently acquired by the New York Public Library.
This will be the first the general public will be able to see Russell’s lyrics and photographs, and listen to never-before-heard recordings.
To coincide with the exhibition, a special screening of the documentary Wild Combination and a rare Russell performance will be shown on April 20 at BAM Rose Cinemas. Following the film, a panel discussion with director Matt Wolf, Audika Records owner Steve Knutson and Russell’s partner, Tom Lee will take place.
Do What I Want: Selections from the Arthur Russell Papers is set to run from March 1 to May 14.
