R. Kelly returns to Chicago to face trial for child pornography and obstruction-of-justice charges

Two weeks ago the US singer was sentenced in New York to 30 years in prison for racketeering and sex trafficking

R. Kelly is back in Chicago’s federal jail before his trial on child pornography and obstruction-of-justice charges.

Set to begin August 15 at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse, Kelly has been accused of conspiring with two former associates to rig his 2008 child pornography case and hide years of alleged sexual abuse of underage girls.

Kelly was transferred to the Metropolitan Correctional Center, the Chicago Tribune reported on Tuesday and denies the accusations.

Only two weeks ago in New York, the 55-year-old was sentenced to 30 years in prison for nine cases of sexual abuse as well as racketeering and human trafficking on June 29

The ongoing court case started in 2021 which outlined that Kelly allegedly used his celebrity status to sexually abuse women and children.

Billboard report that in 2002 Kelly was indicted on 21 counts of child pornography, but was acquitted six years later by a jury.

According to a letter filed by prosecutors, R. Kelly has also been removed from suicide watch as of last Tuesday, July 5.

Kelly alleged he was "placed on suicide watch as a form of punishment even though he was not suicidal” the federal government's filings state.

Court documents say that Kelly was put on suicide watch because the institution felt as though he met the criteria for it.
