Moby: “Food Stamps Shouldn’t Pay for Junk”
He thinks the program should offer "healthy foods like beans, vegetables, fruit and whole grains"
So far this year, among other things, Moby has claimed he invented the iPhone and allegedly conspired with the CIA.
Now the artist has penned a new op-ed in the Wall Street Journal titled Food Stamps Shouldn’t Pay for Junk, calling for restrictions to be placed upon the the items available to buy for Americans who rely on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).
In the piece he talks about his own experiences on food stamps, writing: “It certainly helped my family. My mother was a single parent who struggled to make ends meet in wealthy Darien, Conn., during the 1970s. We relied on food stamps until I was 16.”
He then outlines the unhealthy foods that are available through SNAP such as “candy, soda, cheese products, energy drinks, processed meats” and criticises the impact this has on public healthy, citing a 70 per cent higher susceptibility to diabetes in poor people.
“A better approach would be to focus the program on cheap, healthy foods like beans, vegetables, fruit and whole grains,” he says.
Moby has faced criticism and accusations of classism on social media for his views.
