The four-tracker dropped on Friday

Producer and DJ Darama has released his debut EP, ‘Chaal’.

Available via More Time Records, it showcases the Daytimers crew member’s blend of South Asian percussion with UK bass-heavy sounds.

"This EP is a combination of missing going out and hearing heavy bass in a club whilst being in lockdown,” he explains. “As well as this, discovering different forms of South Asian percussion and rhythm.

“That's why it's called Chaal, which is a name for the different types of rhythm you'd play on a Dhol."

The EP reflects Darama’s heritage and influences, which can be heard throughout his tunes. Born to Punjabi parents, his music consists of a South Asian rhythm-meets-garage, grime and UK funky.

Opening single ‘Vera’ from the EP had its percussion recorded in Darama’s own home, with his family members joining to play traditional instruments.

The collaborative element doesn’t stop there: the final track on the EP contains a remix from Daytimers’ founder, Provhat, to close the release on an upbeat note.

Darama played at Mixmag’s launch party for the South Asia series in 2021, too, providing a genre-defying display, succinctly encompassing his personal sound.
