Lisbon nightclub Lounge is closing due to “disagreements” with building management

Hosting electronic, punk, rock, and jazz acts, the much-loved bar celebrated its 25th birthday in May this year

Much-loved Lisbon nightclub, Lounge, has announced it will be closing its doors after “25 incredible years at Rue da Moeda”.

In a statement released via Instagram on September 23, the venue revealed that they were “unable to renew the rental contract for the space” following “disagreements” with its “landlady’s interests”.

Lounge is a popular spot with locals in the city hosting live rock, punk and jazz bands, as well as electronic acts. It recently celebrated its 25th birthday in May, with the likes of Chinaskee, Filipe Sambado, Venga-Venga and Tormenta playing on an open-air stage.

The post asserts: "We believe that the way we offered an eclectic and comprehensive programme contributed since day one to the identity of the neighbourhood and the city – always with its doors open to everyone, always with a sense of inclusion and diversity".

A sentiment that is reiterated by its loyal fans and customers in the comments:

“Lisbon, what will become of you? A big hug and thank you for the memories you gave us” says Portuguese DJ and producer Violet.

Actor and DJ Nuno Lopes comments: “What sad times we are living in.”

Many of the comments reference “the greed of capitalism”, “neo-liberalism”, and the fact that Lisbon is being "destroyed".

There has been an erosion of other cultural institutions across the city in recent time. Last year, the non-profit arts space and club Arroz Estúdios was at risk of closure due to redevelopment plans. At the time, the venue issued a statement saying it was not “alone in facing the threat of closure. Numerous music and arts venues in Lisbon are experiencing similar challenges, with many forced to leave their spaces or forced outside of the city centre."

Lounge will remain open until the end of the year, with more events to be revealed.
