Jlin announces mini album, shares lead single 'Fourth Perspective'

The tracks are electronic versions of those she created with Third Coast Percussion

Jlin has announced a new body of work, 'Perspective', comprising of a mini-album set for release on September 29.

To accompany the announcement she shared lead single 'Fourth Perspective', which sets the tone for an LP which models as both a catch-up for those yearning for new Jlin, but also those wanting to explore the musician's evolving sound.

In her typical style, 'Perspective' is not genre-bound nor fixed, and was put together across a variation of environments and situations.

The record is in fact a collection of electronic versions of tracks Jlin composed with Third Coast Percussion (T.C.P.), with those cuts resulting in the musician shortlisted as a finalist for the 2023 Pulitzer Prize in Music. Their foundations, she explains, were the "from scratch" acoustic drums.

“Working with T.C.P. was a rewarding experience," she notes. "I love their constant driving ambition. When I would go to their studio we would experiment as much as we could, and that to me is the beauty of composing.”

She continued, explaining how collaborating with dance companies - particularly those of Wayne McGregor and Kyle Abraham - has enhanced her work's evolution: "Working with Kyle and AIM, I felt the need to incorporate more organic percussion and drums. The raw, visceral nature of Kyle's choreography demanded a more tactile, grounded sound.

"I believe that music and dance are deeply interconnected, and the rhythm and physicality of organic percussion needs to mirror the dancers' movements whether it is conceptually or abstract.”
